Good People Brewery's offerings added to MCB list

We just noticed that Magic City Brewfest has added four beers from Good People. That's great news since they haven't been able to brew for quite a while due to their move.

Looks like there will be plenty GP Pale Ale and Hitchhiker IPA available. But El Gordo (aka Double Fatso), Sour Belgian Stout and Hippie IPA will be in limited quantities. In our last visit to the GP brewery, we saw these beers being brewed, and the quantities will indeed be limited. The Magic City Brewfest promises a schedule of when the rare beers will be available and we'll alert you as soon as we see it.

Free Magic City Brewfest tickets: Part III

We hear Magic City Brewfest tickets are selling out all over town. HiPS was totally cleared out last week, and Vulcan says it only has tickets for Friday's session.

So if you're one to wait until the last minute, hedge your bets and enter Beermingham's latest (and last) chance to get tickets to the 2010 Brewfest. This time we're even throwing in a Beermingham cap to keep the sun off while you sip all that sweet, sweet beer.

To enter, just leave a comment on this post telling us which beer on the MCB list you most look forward to trying. There's no right or wrong answer as long as it is a beer from the list. We're most excited about Tommyknocker's Hop Strike! Black Rye IPA. It's being brewed specifically for Free the Hops and will be available to the public for the first time at MCB. Tommyknocker has never produced a beer from the ground up specifically for a single cause, and it will be available in limited quantities.

So what is it you lie awake at night dreaming about?

Deadline for entry is Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be announced sometime on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. This contest is for two beer only tickets to Magic City Brewfest 2010 with a face value of $25 each; and one Beermingham cap. Winner can choose which session he or she wishes to attend. No physical ticket will be given. The names of winners will be placed on a will-call list at the event's front gate. Therefore tickets may not be sold or transferred. Tickets were supplied to specifically for this giveaway and no other compensation was received. Previous contest winners are not eligible to win, but are encouraged to comment anyway. Only one entry per person will be counted, but feel free to comment all you like.

What we're NOT drinking tonight: Oatmeal Coffee Bacon Stout

Oatmeal Coffee Bacon Stout is being called "the ultimate nerd's beer." Quite appropriate considering the brewer is editor of

Homebrewer Sean Fallon says it will be a "... medium bodied stout with a rich coffee flavor, a hint of chocolate and bacon and the smooth mouthfeel that comes with brewing with oats. Plus you get a kick of caffeine and alcohol."

In case you want to make your own batch, Sean is keeping account of the process on Twitter, where he says he just pitched the yeast on Tuesday. You can follow the making of Oatmeal Coffee Bacon Stout here

UPDATED: Magic City Brewfest releases partial beer list

Last year's Magic City Brewfest featured lots of beers not previously sold in Beermingham. This year's list, even in partial form,  is no less impressive. Beers new to the festival are highlighted in yellow, and the list is as golden as Good People's Imperial Pilsner.

A few that jump out at us are Ommegang Hennepin, Sprecher Maibock, Erie Derailed Black Cherry Ale, Bison IPA, AleWerks Drake Tail Ale and O'Fallon Hemp Hop Rye. Not on the list but confirmed for the fest is Good People's El Gordo (aka Double Fatso).

Don't forget, we still have two Brewfest tickets to give away. And for this contest there will be an added bonus. Keep watching Beermingham for your chance to win.

UPDATE: We've now added the beer list to our tabs at the top of Beermingham, and it's already updated since our first post. Getting excited yet?

Make Alabama's beer laws work for you and get a free beer glass

Are you as tired of Alabama's archaic and Byzantine beer laws as we are? Isn't it about time they work out in our favor?

Fans of Newcastle Brown Ale can send in six Newcastle bottle caps and get a free beer glass. A really nice beer glass from the looks of it. So how do out-dated, heavy-handed Alabama beer laws come into play?

While residents of most states are required to send in six actual bottle caps (and Texans must include an additional $2), Alabama is among a handful of states whose resident's are required to send in nothing. Well, almost nothing. All we have to do is print out the PDF, fill it in and mail it to Newcastle. Done. Free glass on its way to you in 10-12 weeks. Why it takes so long is a mystery to us, too.

Thanks for the tip, Birmingham Bargain Mom!
