Happy new year! What'cha drinking?

I've always been told that, traditionally, what you're doing at midnight on New Year's Eve is what you can expect to be doing the rest of the year.

Whether true or not, I've made it a priority to be sipping a glass of champagne as well as a favored beer as the clock struck 12.

This year I had the cheap, yet tasty, champagne, but came up a little short on the beer side. I had meant to ring in the new year with some super-succulent Good People brew. But a lack of planning and an uncooperative schedule at my 9-5 meant I had to make do with what was in the fridge.

Which meant I rang in the new year with a few Sierra Nevada Pale Ales. Not bad at all, but hopefully 2010 will be filled with even more interesting beer.

So, what did you ring in the new year with? A bevy of Belgians? A pack of imperial pilsners?  Let us know and tell us what you hope to be drinking this time next year.

And the beer will flow like, uh, beer...

I stopped at Vulcan Beverage this week to pick up a few singles and struck up a conversation with owner, Mark Green. I asked him what's new and he points out two huge bags of empty, plastic jugs on the floor behind me.

Yes. Vulcan Beverage is about to give Bottle Stoppe and Dee's some competition in the growler business.

Mark says Vulcan will have eight taps flowing sometime within the next week. And if they prove popular, there are plans to add many more. He specifically mentioned Rogue, which, of course, got me excited.

So I head down Greensprings Avenue to Dee's, where I purchase a half gallon each of Snake Handler and Fatso. While those are being poured, I mention Vulcan's plans to also begin filling jugs full of beer.

The response from the Dee's employee was basically, "What Vulcan can do, we can do much better!"

Oh, it looks like things are just getting good for Beermingham!
