Want some Fatso? Get thee to Dee's

I just got back from a 1 a.m. run to Dee's for a plastic jug full of Good People. I didn't care which GP it was, but I wasn't going to settle for anything less. I have good news and I have really good news from Dee's.

The good news is I left with a gallon of Oatmeal Stout. That's good stuff.

But the really good news is that I was told that the Abita Andygator Dee's has been pumping out for weeks now is almost gone. On deck? A keg of the legendary Fatso. Dee's hopes to have it tapped sometime early Saturday.

Race ya to it.

Twitter feed: Good People says Fatso "out the door!"

We're a little late on this, but according to Good People's Twitter feed, about a week ago they had Fatso "kegged and out of the door." It's a little late right now (oh, about 1 a.m.) but we're gonna try to call them ASAP to find out where those kegs went. We suspect J. Clyde, of course, but it could have accidentally been sent to our palatial offices. Just saying.

Other GP Tweets of note: "
Revival of the snake handler next Monday....tent not included." and "Brewer needs a new intern."

If the intern position includes all the GP that can fit in a car, we're applying and buying a Tahoe.

Free the Family next month at J. Clyde

J. Clyde has the best beer selection in town and some really good food. But it's not usually the most family-friendly eatery. Inside, it's dark, cramped and noisy. The patio out back is less noisy and more roomy, but it's usually populated by the smokers.

Apparently, the Clyde knows this and the second Saturday of every month, they're going smokeless. OK, not cold turkey, but at least from 3-6 p.m., you and the spouse and the kids can enjoy some fried sauerkraut balls and maybe an order of fish and chips.

Wanna save some money? Check out Restaurant.com for discount J. Clyde gift certificates. Get a $10 certificate for $4, $25 for $10, and $50 for $20. Use the code NAPKIN to knock another 80% off! They're only good for food and there is a minimum purchase for each. But it's still a great deal.

Silvertron tries out new brews

Silvertron Cafe on Clairmont in Forest Park is trying to expand its beer offerings and says it's testing out some new beers. One is an Imperial Lager from Lion Brewery and the other is North Coast Brewing's Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale. Both are only $3.75 apiece, which sounds like a good deal until you read some reviews.

Beer Advocate gives the Pranqster a B+, but a C to the Sri Lankan lager.

Hmm. I think we'll wait until Silvertron has expanded its offerings a little further.

Cleaning out the cellar: Rogue Morimoto Soba

The hops are freed in Alabama, so I'm cleaning out my beer cellar. OK, not so much a cellar. More like a small closet. Next to my shoes. That's where I used to keep all the beer I brought back from Atlanta. Some of the bottles were capped months, even years ago. But the beer I had squirreled away in there was illegal to sell in Alabama.

Now, much of it is available right here in Beermingham. So I'm working through all those bottles of premium beer, making room for more shoes.

So, on Saturday I cleared out a Rogue Morimoto Soba Ale. At one time, Rogue called this Buckwheat Ale, and I was a huge fan. But that was at least nine years ago. I now consider it a thoroughly drinkable beer, but nothing super engaging. That said, it's too bad Rogue only issues this beer in bottles too large to be sold in Alabama. I'll need to make another trip to Atlanta to replenish my supply of 1 pint, ounce bottles.

Or maybe we'll just wait for Free the Hops to take on another Alabama law and legalize larger bottles. At least we hope that's the next cause for Danner and the gang.

Dee's has Snake Handler!

At least that's our theory so far. I just got home with a half-gallon of what Dee's told me was Good People IPA. I thought it looked really dark in the milk jug, and when I poured a glass, the aroma of hops knocked me in the head. A glass later, and I'm convinced it's either Snake Handler or the best damn IPA Good People has ever brewed!

The last time Dee's had SH, it went very quickly. We highly recommend you get over there ASAP. But not until I've had a chance to get another half gallon, please!
